Mai Sakagami is a descendant of the Sakagami family, whose ancestors defeated the Great Demon Lord and saved Japan a thousand years ago. Living quietly in a secluded mountain region, Mai is eventually ordered by the general ruling the prosperous land of Isetsu to eliminate a monster attacking the capital. Together with her childhood friend Shigure, Mai successfully completes the mission. However, their brief moment of peace comes to an abrupt end when dark clouds cover the sky and the supposedly defeated Great Demon Lord is resurrected. A horde of demons soon floods the town, attacking its people. Determined to protect everyone, Mai heads toward the castle to confront the resurrected demon lord. What begins as a heroic mission gradually turns into a darker struggle, forcing Mai to make difficult choices in order to protect the people—and especially the person close to her. As the story progresses, Mai is placed in increasingly humiliating situations and pressured into obeying those in positions of power. Her pride and determination are gradually tested as she becomes caught between her desire to save Shigure and the consequences of the choices she makes.
